Workshops

Community workshops provide a forum from researchers, engineers, providers of weather and climate data and services, commercial GIS vendors, educators and students to explore the use of GIS in the atmospheric and related sciences.

Upcoming Workshops

NCAR's 3rd community workshop on GIS in Weather, Climate and Impacts will be held in Boulder on October 27-29, 2008. Workshop registration is open until October 1, 2008. For more information, draft program, logistics and registration visit http://www.gis.ucar.edu/08workshop/index.jsp

Please email olgaw at ucar.edu if you have any questions.

Previous Workshops

January 25th, 2008 - The fifth one-day Atmospheric Data Modeling workshop took place in New Orleans, LA on January 25th, 2008 at the 88th Annual AMS Meeting . The workshop was held at the Convention Center . To view the results from this workshop click here.

July 6-8th, 2005 - As a step towards fuller integration of the Earth system sciences and bridging atmospheric and GIS communities, on July 6-8, 2005 the NCAR GIS Initiative held the 2nd Workshop on GIS in Weather, Climate and Impacts. The workshop defined research needs and opportunities in geospatial research and education and addressed issues of data management and discovery with a goal to increase usability of the atmospheric and the Earth system sciences.

Developing an atmospheric data model for ArcGIS, with the goal to facilitate extension of GIS capabilities for representing, querying and analyzing time-dependent, real-time, and volumetric data, has been a task of the Atmospheric Data Modeling working group over the past three years. To learn more about development of the atmospheric data model, visit the ArcGIS Atmospheric Data Modeling Workshops website.

August 12-14th, 2002 - A GIS in Weather, Climate and Impacts workshop was held on 12-14 August 2002 at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. The goals of the workshops were: 1) to explore capabilities of GIS as an integrating tool for scientific research and applications at NCAR and in the geosciences community; 2) to provide a fostering mechanism for developing collaborations in interdisciplinary GIS-based studies and research areas in meteorology, climatology and related geo- and social sciences; and 3) to improve communication between the academic community, the private sector and government organizations in weather and climate GIS applications.
