Saving data from ArcMap to KML

In ArcGIS 9.2 introduced the new tool which exported layers and entire maps to KML. KML is a format for sharing maps and visualizations to others who do not have GIS software. Below are instructions on how to export data from ArcMap to KML.

1. Bring the data you wish to view as KML into ArcMap.

  • File > Add Data > Navigate to your data source > Click Add

  • 2. Symbolize your data.
  • Right-click on your new layer in your TOC > Properties
  • Click the Symbolize tab > and render your data acoordingly

  • 3. Export your layer to KML
  • Open ArcToolbox by clicking the Toolbox icon on your Standard Toolbar
  • Open the 3D Analyst Tools > Conversion > To KML
  • Double-click on Layer To KML
  • Input the layer as your input Layer
  • Specify a new output KMZ file (the output will be .KMZ)
  • Specify your output scale (you can choose the scale at which you are using in ArcMap to display your data)
  • Click Ok
  • The output KMZ file can then be opened in other applications that read KML file formats.
