Maps & Data

In FY04 the GIS Initiative started a “GIS Climate Change Scenarios” project to serve a wide community of GIS users interested in global climate change. In this project, the GIS Initiative collaborates with the Community Data Portal team to allow for web-based distribution of global datasets of climate change scenarios that are being generated for the upcoming 4th Assessment Report of the IPCC by the CCSM. Through a dynamic converter CCSM data are translated from the NetCDF format into a common GIS shapefile format. That allows user to view climate change data on-line via an Internet Mapping Server and to download global datasets for further GIS-based visualization, analysis, and mapping. The project's website will be fully functional in January 2005.

For UCAR staff the GIS Initiative has many useful ESRI spatial datasets available. UCAR staff can browse and download these datasets at this webpage.
