My World GIS - A GIS Designed for Education
David Smith - GLOBE Program

Spatial Thinking within the educational/scientific community is gaining momentum as evidenced by the recent NRC publication titled "Learning to Think Spatially". GIS software is helping support effort in spatial thinking by assisting students of all ages access, visualize and analyze geospatial data. Join us as a new GIS software program, My World GIS, will be introduced and reviewed. Emphasis will be placed on the design considerations and functionality of this software including its ability to connect to both local and online datasets.

My World GIS is a geographic information system designed specifically for use in educational settings. Its intended audience is middle school through college geosciences and geography courses where investigations involving geographic data can support the learning goals of the course. My World is designed to meet the needs of students and teachers while keeping the constraints of educational settings in mind. It combines the power of a full-featured GIS environment with the support and structure required by novice users in an educational environment.

My World provides most of the powerful features of a professional GIS environment. These features include customizable display of layer variables, multiple geographic projections, table and map views of data, distance-measurement tools, buffering and query operations. They have been selected to provide the greatest power to students without overwhelming them with complexity. The features are accessed through a supportive interface designed with the needs of students and teachers in mind. My World reads data in the GIS industry-standard shapefile format, as well as tab and comma-delimited text files as well as ASCII grid files. My World also can access data through THREDDS servers and netcdf file formats. My World is available for Windows, Macintosh OS X, and Unix.
