Satellite Archaeology
Carl Drews - ACD
The past leaves its trace in the present. An unusual mound, a straight ridge, a trough in an otherwise featureless landscape - all these can be signs of ancient human activity. We think of archaeologists digging in the dirt, unearthing and cleaning an old potsherd with trowels and fine brushes. However, recent advances in satellite technology mean that the signs of past civilizations can now be detected from earth orbit. Desk work complements field work, and Google Earth can reveal the most likely sites to excavate. Carl Drews will present techniques and examples of satellite archaeology from his Master's thesis research, which reconstructs Moses' crossing of the Red Sea as described in Exodus 14.
